Kazakhstan AIFC Court Bars Coinbase, Five Others

Kazakhstan's Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) court has barred Coinbase and five unnamed exchanges from operating unlicensed crypto services within the financial zone, according to CoinDesk, as of October 2026.

Why It Matters

The injunctions target one of Central Asia's most prominent regulatory sandboxes, signalling that the AIFC — which operates under English common law — will enforce licensing requirements rather than tolerate grey-market activity. For crypto users and operators inside the AIFC, access to these six platforms is now legally restricted until licences are obtained or court orders lifted. The ruling does not apply to the rest of Kazakhstan, so users outside Astana's financial district face no immediate legal change. Operators with regional ambitions in Central Asia now have a clear signal: AIFC compliance is mandatory, not optional.

Context

The AIFC launched in 2018 as Kazakhstan's bid to attract international financial firms under a distinct legal framework separate from Kazakhstani civil law. The zone has progressively tightened crypto oversight, requiring exchanges to register with the Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA) before serving clients within its borders. Coinbase, despite its global scale, has not publicly disclosed an AFSA licence as of October 2026.

What's Next

The six affected platforms must either secure AIFC licences or challenge the injunctions through the AIFC Court — a process that could take months. Watch for AFSA to publish formal enforcement guidance, which would clarify whether additional unlicensed operators face similar action.
