How to set up a self-custody wallet for Polymarket
To trade on Polymarket you need a self-custody wallet on the Polygon network. The simplest setup: install MetaMask (or Coinbase Wallet), securely back up your recovery phrase, add the Polygon network, then connect it to Polymarket. Self-custody means you hold the keys — no one can freeze your funds, but you're also responsible for them. Here's how to do it safely.

Step 1 — Install a wallet
Install MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet from the official site or app store — never from a link in a DM or ad. Both are free, self-custody wallets that work with Polymarket. On desktop, MetaMask is a browser extension; on mobile, both have apps.
Step 2 — Back up your recovery phrase (the critical step)
Your wallet generates a 12-word recovery phrase. Write it on paper and store it offline — anyone with these words controls your funds, and no one can recover them for you if you lose them. Never type your phrase into a website, never store it in a screenshot or cloud note, and never share it. WeeBet, Polymarket, and your wallet provider will NEVER ask for it.
Step 3 — Add the Polygon network
Polymarket runs on Polygon. Most wallets let you add Polygon with one click, or you can add it from a trusted network directory. Once added, you can hold USDC and pay the (tiny) Polygon transaction fees.
Step 4 — Connect to Polymarket
On Polymarket, click Connect and choose your wallet. Approve the connection in your wallet. You're now ready to deposit USDC and trade. Connecting is read-only until you approve a specific transaction — connecting alone never moves funds.
FAQ
Which wallet is best for Polymarket?
MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet are both well-supported self-custody options that work with Polymarket on Polygon. MetaMask is the most common on desktop; Coinbase Wallet is convenient if you already use Coinbase to buy USDC.
What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?
Your funds become unrecoverable — self-custody means no company holds a backup. That's why backing up the phrase offline, on paper, is the single most important step. Treat it like the keys to a safe.
Is connecting my wallet to Polymarket safe?
Connecting is safe — it doesn't move funds. Funds only move when you approve a specific transaction in your wallet. The real risk is phishing sites that mimic Polymarket, so always check the URL and never enter your recovery phrase anywhere.
